What to Do When Someone Dies
The first hours after a death can feel overwhelming. The steps depend on where the death happened. Here is what to do, simply.
If the death happens at home
If the death was expected and hospice is involved, call the hospice nurse first. If it was unexpected, call 911.
Then call TUMI at (219) 900-3995. We will arrange to bring your loved one into our care, and when you are ready, we will go through the next steps and the paperwork with you.

In a hospital or care facility
Staff will confirm the death and ask which provider your family has chosen. Tell them TUMI Crematorium, then call us at (219) 900-3995.
We coordinate the release with the hospital or facility directly, so you do not have to.
In the days that follow
Let close family and friends know, and look for any written wishes or a pre-arranged plan. Secure the home, and arrange care for any pets.
When you meet with us, we will help with the death certificate, permits, and any notices, and we will tell you which agencies and accounts to contact.
